Planting instructions amaryllis
At home
Planting
- After receiving your amaryllis bulb, it can be planted immediately.
- If this is not possible, the bulb can be stored at a temperature of 5-13 ° C to prevent premature sprouting.
- Plant the amaryllis bulb in a sturdy pot that is large enough.
- After planting, there must be at least 1 cm of space between the bulb and the edge of the pot.
- The bulb should be planted about 2/3 in the ground, keeping the neck of the bulb above the ground. The amaryllis has no special demands on the soil, ordinary potting soil or garden soil is fine. Water immediately after planting to ensure a good connection between the roots and the soil. Place the pot in a warm, light place at a temperature of at least 18 ° C.
Growth
- Depending on the temperature, the stems and leaves will start to grow within 2 weeks.
- As soon as these emerge, the plant can have water again, but certainly not too much in the beginning. Give water next to the bulb not on top, to prevent rotting.
- Because both the bulb and the potting soil contain sufficient nutrients, it is not necessary to add plant food to the irrigation water.
- On average, the bulbs will flower 6 to 9 weeks after planting.
After flowering
- After flowering it is possible to get the bulb to flower again the following year.
- For this it is necessary that the plant and the bulb continue to grow well for seven months at room temperature, so that new flower buds can be formed inside the bulb.
- Place the plant in a sunny and warm place, water regularly with plant food once every six weeks.
- After these seven months, a cool period of 8 to 10 weeks is required to allow the buds in the bulb to stretch. There are two options for this:
1.Place the plant at a temperature of 8-15 ° C during this period, and water during the first 4 weeks. At the end of this period, cut off the leaves above the bulb neck and return the plant to room temperature. When the new leaves and stems appear, watering can be started again.
2.Cut off the leaves about 3 cm above the bulb neck and remove the bulb from the pot. Then store the bulb in a warm dry place for two weeks to dry. Then store the bulb in a cool place at a temperature of 8-15 ° C. After this period, the bulb can be planted again in a pot with potting compost and it will flower again after 6-9 weeks.
Outside
Planting
- Amaryllis bulbs can be planted in the garden or in planters on the balcony or patio from mid-March to mid-August.
- Plant the bulbs in a sunny spot, but sheltered from strong winds.
- After receiving your amaryllis bulb, it can be planted immediately.
- If this is not possible, the bulb can be stored at a temperature of 5-13 ° C to prevent premature sprouting.
- If the bulbs are planted in groups, keep a minimum spacing of 15 cm for large-flowering amaryllis, and 7-8 cm for small-flowering amaryllis.
- The bulb should be planted about 2/3 in the ground, keeping the neck of the bulb above the ground. The amaryllis has no special demands on the soil, ordinary potting soil or garden soil is fine. Water immediately after planting to ensure a good connection between the roots and the soil. Press the soil well after planting.
Growth
- Depending on the temperature, the stems and leaves will start to grow in 2-4 weeks.
- As soon as these emerge, the plant can have water again, but certainly not too much in the beginning.
- Because both the bulb and the potting soil contain sufficient nutrients, it is not necessary to add plant food to the irrigation water.
- On average, the bulbs will flower 6 till 10 weeks after planting.
After flowering
- After flowering, it is also possible to get bulbs that have been planted outside to flower again the following year, but this is only possible with bulbs that were planted in April-May.
- For this it is necessary that the plant and the bulb continue to grow as well as possible for six months in a sunny and warm place.
- Water regularly during dry periods with plant food once every six weeks.
- After the end of October, the plant will not or hardly grow in the Dutch climate and there are two options:
1.Take the plant (s) inside the container and place it for 8-10 weeks at a temperature of 8-15 ° C, and water for the first 4 weeks. At the end of this period, cut off the leaves above the bulb neck and return the plant to room temperature. (or outside, if the outside temperature rises above 15 degrees). When the new leaves and stems appear, watering can be started again.
2. Cut the leaf off about 3 cm above the bulb neck and remove the bulb from the ground or container. Then store the bulb in a warm dry place for two weeks to dry. Then store the bulb in a cool place at a temperature of 8-15 ° C. After this period, the bulb can be planted again in a pot with potting compost and it will flower again after 6-9 weeks.
The amaryllis cannot withstand moderate or severe frost, and does not like long-term rain at low temperatures, so if it remains in the ground there is a risk of freezing or rotting.
